The Wedding Singer musical opens Australian tour in Adelaide

Move over, Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore ... the Australian cast of The Wedding Singer is about to put its own stamp on the musical stage version of the classic film comedy.

Hit musical comedy The Wedding Singer arrives in Adelaide

There will be extra cause for celebration when the Broadway adaptation of hit film The Wedding Singer begins its Australian tour in Adelaide on Friday.

It will be the first musical staged at Her Majesty’s Theatre since the venue’s $67 million rebuild was completed more than a year ago.

Based on the hit 1998 film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the stage version features Christian Charisiou as wedding singer Robbie Hart and Teagan Wouters as waitress Julia.

Adelaide actor Nadia Komazec has returned to her home city to play Holly, the uninhibited cousin and best friend of Julia.

“Holly is effervescent, she’s bubbly, she’s optimistic, she’s got all this energy and she’s a really powerful woman,” Komazec said.

“She’s in touch with her sexuality, she knows who she is, she’s got great street smarts … and she’s obsessed with Madonna.”

Born in 1989, Komazec was just a bit too young to remember the show’s 1980s setting.

“When I was auditioning for the show I rewatched it just to reacquaint myself with all the different characters. It’s such a brilliant film,” Komazec said.

“The musical is really such a great version of the movie … it really is so similar. I think audiences will absolutely lap it up.

“It has an original score, which is brilliant. They way they have meshed it all together is really interesting and clever.”

The Wedding Singer will also play Melbourne in May, the Gold Coast in June and Sydney in July. Details at weddingsingermusical.com.au
