Time will turn back to the 1980s when the stage musical adaptation of The Wedding Singer opens its national tour in Adelaide in April.

Based on the hit 1998 film which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, the Broadway musical features an original score and will be at Her Majesty’s Theatre for a three-week season before it heads to Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Sydney.

“We feel very honoured to be the first musical to tread the boards at Her Majesty’s Theatre, following her major redevelopment,’ said producer David Venn.

“We know how excited Adelaide is for this – and we are right there with you.”

The Australian production is still being cast, with a national search being conducted through video auditions by performers including real-life Melbourne wedding singers Violet Anderson and Johnny Moretti.

They will be looking to step into Sandler’s shoes as jilted New Jersey wedding singer Robbie Hart and Barrymore’s role as waitress Julia Sullivan, who is engaged to become “Julia Guglia”.

The show is set in 1985, when hair was huge, collars were up, and Walkman cassette players and Atari video games were still the rage.

Hit musical SIX, based on the story of Henry VIII’s wives, was supposed to be at Her Majesty’s as part of the Cabaret Festival last June, but was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After an extremely challenging year, we couldn’t be happier to be touring The Wedding Singer,” Mr Venn said.

“It’s such a joyful, nostalgic romp of pure rom-com fun, and hopefully just what the doctor ordered.

“I can’t wait to see audiences dress in their ’80s finest and join the party of the year.”

The Wedding Singer is at Her Majesty’s Theatre from April 9 to 25. Tickets go on sale December 9 from BASS. Join the waitlist at weddingsingermusical.com.au.
