Arts news: State Theatre props sale; Gluttony comes to Glenelg

Props and costumes will be sold off by State Theatre this weekend, while the Gluttony team is bringing a bit of Mad March to Glenelg this winter.

Eiffel Tower replicas, a phone box, Las Vegas and Hollywood signs, a full-scale model horse and, yes, even a kitchen sink are among the props and costumes which will be on sale at State Theatre Company’s warehouse this weekend.

Antique tricycles and prams, traffic lights and railway crossing signs, giant Oscar statuettes and oversized chess pieces will be among more than 1000 items on offer.

The sale also features vintage clothing and custom costumes from such past shows as Dance Nation, Single Asian Female, The Misanthrope and The Ham Funeral.

Wardrobe production supervisor Enken Hagge and costume maker Martine Micklem said that, while it was sad to see some items go, it was good they could find new homes and uses.

“It’s nice to know they can have a life with somebody else,” Ms Hagge said.

Ms Micklem said one of the most unique items for sale was a “golden hand-tailored sun suit” made for the show Masquerade about 10 years ago.

There is also a huge range of period furniture for sale, including church pews, sofas and 1950s kitchen units.

State Theatre’s Costume and Vintage Sale is at the former Wigg & Son warehouse, 79 Port Rd, Thebarton (access via Walsh St) on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28, from 10am-4pm.

Mad March in July as Gluttony comes to Glenelg

A new winter festival will bring a touch of Gluttony to Glenelg for the July school holidays, with everything from family-friendly daytime activities to adults-only late night acts.

The inaugural Glenelg Winter Arts Festival will run at Colley Reserve from July 6 to 23 and feature more than 32 shows and events ranging from stand-up comedians Wil Anderson and Peter Helliar, to circus acts, fiery burlesque show Inferno and pop music tribute concerts.

There will also be daily workshops, weekend market stalls, live acoustic music and outlets serving hot winter food and beverages, with covered gathering spaces and outdoor heaters.

Performances will take place in two heated tents, the May Wirth big top and the more intimate Drawing Room venue.

Holdfast Bay mayor Amanda Wilson said the winter festival was “shaping up to be the hottest event in Adelaide this July”.

“With so much else on offer at Glenelg to enjoy – be it brunch, lunch or dinner with some shopping in between – there’s never been a better time to stay and play at the Bay,” Ms Wilson said.

The Glenelg Winter Arts Festival has been created by the team behind Gluttony, which usually operates in Rymill Park during Mad March.

Program director Elena Kirschbaum said the new event was a way to “engage with the arts during winter” in a coastal location.

“What is really exciting is that we do think of this as a taste of Gluttony,” Ms Kirschbaum said.

“It’s bringing together incredible artists with a really broad program, and fantastic food and drink offerings with a bit of a winter bent … to create a really lovely atmosphere.”

Singer Rachel Vidoni, who won the best music show award for her Beatles tribute Come Together at Gluttony earlier this year, will perform her new production Her Majesty: The Queen Rock Show.

“Everyone says Adelaide is Mad March, but there is always a lot going on,” Ms Vidoni said.

“I like the concept of bringing something else into the seventh month of the year and supporting local artists.”
