Lisa McCune will star in the Australian premiere production of the Bob Dylan musical Girl From the North Country, in Adelaide as part of State Theatre Company’s 2022 season.
The critically acclaimed Broadway show will open at next year’s Sydney Festival before coming to Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide from March 25 to April 10.
Former Blue Heelers star McCune will play Elizabeth Laine, whose family operates a run-down guesthouse, and who is suffering from a form of dementia which leads to childlike outbursts.
“Every now and then a show or character has a profound effect on you,” McCune said of her role.
“I’ve always loved my visits to Adelaide and I’m excited to return … I can’t wait for South Australian audiences to see this beautiful show.”
The ensemble cast will also feature Helen Dallimore, Zahra Newman, Terence Crawford and Peter Carroll.
Described as “a play with music”, Girl From the North Country features songs which span Dylan’s career, including Jokerman, Like a Rolling Stone, Hurricane and Forever Young, as well as the title track.
State Theatre artistic director Mitchell Butel said the sets were being built in Adelaide and would be shipped to Sydney and back.
“The workshop team are hard at it already, because it is quite a big build, costume wise and set wise,” Butel said.
“It takes those beautiful Dylan songs and reimagines them as interior monologues.”
State Theatre’s 2022 season will open in February with Justine Clarke in Girls & Boys, and include new productions of Antigone, The Normal Heart and Single Asian Female.
