Adelaide Fringe became an international launch pad for cabaret spectacular Yummy, which will return with a “remix” of its show featuring new artists for this year’s event.

“It’s hugely important. Our season last year launched us internationally,’’ said Yummy director James Welsby, aka drag fashionista Valerie Hex.

“We got our offer to tour to Edinburgh from our season in Adelaide. We also booked a season in Brisbane Festival and toured to New Plymouth in New Zealand, for the Right Royal Cabaret Festival, because of Adelaide Fringe.’’

Its new act Yummy Deluxe is among a record 1326 shows and events in this year’s 148-page Fringe program, which is free in The Advertiser on Saturday.

FULL GUIDE

The original Yummy was also among just a handful of Australian acts to get five-star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe, the world’s biggest arts festival, last August.

The Scotsman described it as “a sexy, transgressive, genderfluid, fashion conscious non-stop party” and listed it as one of Edinburgh’s top 10 shows.

Welsby said Yummy Deluxe, which is at The Box in the Garden of Unearthly Delights from February 19 to March 17, was “truly an ensemble show”.

“The show features circus performances, singing, comedy, dance and abstract surrealism. I always say that Yummy is as avant-garde as it is entertaining, so there’s a strong component of drag that defies convention and is avant-garde in a fashion sense.’’

Zelia Rose, who has toured internationally with US burlesque star Dita Von Teese, and Adelaide aerialist Jarred Dewey of Circa and La Soiree acclaim will join original Yummy hula-hooper Hannie Helsden, drag dancer Jandruze and vocalist Joni in the Moon.

“There’s a gender balance within the cast – we have six performers, three women and three men – but we treat gender like a bit of a playground, Welsby said. “Everything is available to climb on and swing off, if you know what I mean.’’

Adelaide Fringe — February 15 to March 17. Tickets at FringeTix and adelaidefringe.com.au.
