Ali Clarke’s radio ratings revival has been short-lived with the presenter’s eponymous Mix 102.3 breakfast show slumping in the latest survey.

After making great strides this year, the Ali Clarke Breakfast Show – which made its debut at the start of 2022 after its namesake left the ABC – dropped 1.6 listener share points to 9.6, tumbling from third down to sixth position.

That’s where the program started 2023, with 8.5 share points in sixth spot back in March.

At the other end, FIVEaa’s breakfast kings, David Penberthy and Will Goodings, have returned to the throne, earning a share of top spot.

The duo recorded 12.2 listener share points in the sixth survey of the year, up 0.7, which was enough to move them into equal first place overall in the all-important timeslot.

They’re alongside Triple M’s Mark Ricciuto, Chris Dittmar and Laura O’Callaghan, who after four consecutive wins in the make-or-break breakfast market, slipped slightly by 0.4 share points to also finish on 12.2.

Taking out third spot was ABC Adelaide’s Stacey Lee and Nikolai Beilharz with 10.5 share points (down 0.2), closely followed by SAFM’s Rebecca Morse and Mark Soderstrom, and Nova 919’s Jodie Oddy and Andrew Hayes, who both recorded 10.0 share points.

It’s a tight race in Adelaide’s main radio ratings battleground, with just 0.9 share points separating ABC in third position and Mix 102.3 in sixth.

Breakfast is considered the most important timeslot because that’s where the advertising dollars are and, if you hook the listeners at breakfast, they tend to stick with the same station for the rest of the day.

In the overall rankings, Triple M reigned supreme, taking over from Mix as the number one station with 11.7. Mix remained in second spot with 11.4, ahead of Nova in 10.6 and SAFM on 10.

It was a disappointing survey overall for ABC and Mix, which suffered falls in listener share across every timeslot.

The declining audience numbers continue a trend for ABC, with the public broadcaster shedding listener numbers across all programs over the last 15 months.
