Australian actor Teresa Palmer shares heartbreaking miscarriage journey

Hollywood actor Teresa Palmer has opened up about her grief after she and husband Mark Webber recently suffered a miscarriage.

The Adelaide-born mother-of-five shared the heartbreaking news on her podcast, revealing their baby died at the 10-week mark while the couple were in Los Angeles.

After a midwife appointment failed to detect a heartbeat, Palmer went to have a scan which confirmed that their fifth baby had died in the womb.

“I just had this feeling. I remember it now. I walked in there … I saw this other couple and this woman had such a big belly and I was looking at her and I was thinking, ‘she’s finding out the gender’,” Palmer said on The Mother Daze podcast.

“And I knew I was going in to confirm that I had a dead baby inside of me, I knew it.

“I didn’t have confirmation apart from the feeling in my heart. I remember lying there and being so out of my body … I saw this baby that had grown so much since the last scan and I could see its face.

“The baby was there, it was totally still. I could see its little arms and its little legs. It was completely still.”

The Fall Guy actor remained stoic in the immediate aftermath, but later that night, as she was putting her children to bed, the emotions came flooding out.

“As they were falling asleep, I just started sobbing and holding my tummy, putting my hands on my tummy and I was just like, I’m so sorry … I hope you felt wanted, I hope you felt loved and that we wanted you a part of our family,” she said.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you. I just felt such grief for this little baby.”

Palmer shares children Bodhi, 10, Forest, 7, Poet, 5, and Prairie, 2, with Mark, while the US-born filmmaker also has a teenage son Isaac Love, from a previous relationship.

In coming days, Palmer said she felt “anger, guilt and shame” before coming to terms with the couple’s devastating loss.

“Then I got to a place of peace, such profound peace. It felt so amazing. I said goodbye to the baby again,” she said.

“I was like ‘I love you, thank you for coming, I’m so honoured to have held you and all you knew was nothing but love for the time you were alive’.”

Palmer has made no secret of her desire to have more kids – with plans to have an IVF baby later this year – but said her latest pregnancy was a surprise.

“My biggest worry was what is my US team going to think, they are going to be so mortified, I promised them I’d be here I’d be doing films and TV this year,” she admitted on the podcast.

“I was very nervous I would get dropped with my agency or my reps … which in hindsight, I know they’re beautiful people and they would have been very supportive.”

Palmer confirmed the couple still want to have more children and thanked everyone for their support.

“To anyone listening who has been through pregnancy loss or miscarriage … my heart is with you,” she said.

“It’s been a really healing and eye-opening experience. Finding the light in the dark feelings is always the way that I get through hard things and this was really hard.”
