State Government concept designs for seven more school projects in Adelaide’s western suburbs

Artist impressions for school upgrades throughout the western suburbs have been unveiled, and there are some very different visions on the books. How do you rate yours?

The designs vary wildly between schools. See them all below.

Designs have been unveiled for two of the schools which had their zones expanded when Adelaide High’s was cut.

Hundreds of families were angered last year when the State Government pushed them out of the CBD school zone into those for Underdale High, Plympton International College and Springbank Secondary.

Underdale High’s $20 million project includes a new performing arts building with a “performance space” for 150 people and “partially retractable seating”. It will also have a canteen.

There will be a new two-storey admin building as well, and refurbishments to create four science laboratories and a uniform shop.

The gym and “automotive” buildings will be both be extended, the latter to allow for metal work classes.

Plympton International College will have a $3 million makeover with a new, two-storey performing arts centre and a range of refurbishments.

They are among seven more western suburbs schools for which designs were unveiled today, with projects worth $60 million in total.

It comes after The Advertiser revealed the concepts for the $13.8 million expansion of Brighton Secondary School.

The most striking of the new designs is for a performing arts and music centre at Ocean View College that will have aluminium screening to be illuminated at night. The centre will have a recording studio, control room and “retractable elevated seating”.

The Taperoo school’s $5 million upgrade will also cover refurbishments to create new art and digital design rooms.

Henley High School’s $12 million project includes “feature screening that will act as the gateway to the school”, plus a new administration centre and other new buildings for science, arts, and home economics.

The centrepiece of Hallett Cove School’s $10 million revamp will be a “full refurbishment and expansion of the middle school building”, which will include two food technology laboratories and two visual art studios.

There are also concept designs for Adelaide Secondary School of English and Brighton Primary School, which are both in line for $5 million projects.

Education Minister John Gardner said the projects would begin in the coming months.

A year ago, Mr Gardner announced the shared CBD zone for Adelaide High and Adelaide Botanic High would be reduced, arguing the former Labor Government’s expansion of it was unsustainable.

Underdale, Plympton and Springbank are all well under enrolment capacity.
