Designs for Brighton Secondary School expansion revealed

A new two-storey middle school building will be the centrepiece of an upgrade of Brighton Secondary School, concept designs reveal.
The building will have 15 classrooms and three science laboratories.
The campus upgrade requires relocation of beach volleyball courts. It will also include refurbishment of seven classrooms, landscaping and extra bicycle parking.
The $13.8 million cost has raised eyebrows among other school communities because the redevelopment will lift Brighton’s capacity by only 100 students to 1800 when Year 7s are added in 2022.
Other schools, including Golden Grove High, are receiving similar amounts to add as many as 400 enrolments.
Education Minister John Gardner said the build would start in the coming months, “creating jobs and contributing to the massive boost to our economy that our education capital works program will bring”.
“These concept plans reflect local priorities for the school and provide a glimpse of the modern, world-class facilities we are building as part of a generational upgrade of schools,” he said.
In a government-approved plan, Brighton is capping its out-of-zone enrolments in its special interest music, volleyball and academic programs to 65 per year level.
International students are to be capped at 24 per year level. In 2018, more than half of Brighton students were from outside its zone.
