More than a quarter of Year 12s at one Adelaide school have achieved ATARS of 99 or above.
As authorities do not supply data on SACE achievement for individual schools, The Advertiser scoured school websites and Facebook pages to find those trumpeting their success after results were released on Tuesday.
Private girls school Wilderness, at Medindie, had 22 students achieve tertiary admission ranks (ATARs) of 99+, while more than half had ATARs above 95.
Wilderness students also bagged 58 SACE subject Merits.
The more than 30 schools for which The Advertiser collected results information together accounted for about 750 of the 1151 Merits awarded statewide this year.
Schools choose to report to their communities on different measures. Common ones are Merits, median ATARs, numbers and/or proportions of students who achieve in various ATAR bands, and proportions of ‘A’ grades.
Medians and percentages are more useful than raw numbers, because some schools have much larger Year 12 graduating cohorts than others.
University Senior College had 13 students, or 7.9 per cent of its cohort, achieve an ATAR of 99+, and more than a quarter were 95+. USC students also claimed 47 Merits.
Seymour College, Loreto College and St Peter’s Girls School were among those celebrating median ATARs of above 90. Two-thirds of all grades at St Peter’s Girls were ‘A’s.
Students at public Glenunga International High claimed 62 Merits, St Ignatius’ College 51 and Immanuel College 42.
Though it is clear that many schools still see high ATARs as an important way of attracting prospective parents, the SA Tertiary Admissions Centre has said some are trying to focus less on ATARs in their marketing, and focus more on other measures of success such as vocational outcomes, wellbeing, and community work.
Along those lines, Seymour has produced an online booklet called Complete Achievement: Celebrating the Class of 2019, in which academic results is just one aspect.
Several schools promoted the numbers of students who had achieved Certificate III vocational qualifications as well as SACE results and ATARs.
Some prominent schools offer the International Baccalaureate as well as the SACE, which affects results in several ways.
Firstly, high academic achievers often opt for the IB, which makes a school’s SACE results look weaker than they would otherwise be.
Secondly, IB results aren’t out yet until early January. When they arrive, it will alter schools’ final median ATARs. Also, some Year 12s do IB subjects and count them towards the SACE, so their SACE results aren’t yet finalised.

Pembroke School, for example, said on its website: “28 of our SACE students studied an IB subject this year, meaning that for nearly 20 per cent of our SACE cohort their results will improve further in January when IB Diploma and subject results are released.”
Pembroke already has 10 students with ATAR 99+, including one with the highest possible 99.95, and 35 SACE subject Merits.
Walford said it had chosen not to release results until IB scores can be incorporated in early January.
