A performing arts centre with a 300-seat auditorium, an “entrepreneurial hub” and extensive sport facilities designed for community use after hours feature in plans for a new public school in Adelaide’s north.
The Advertiser can reveal concept plans for the “birth to Year 12” school to be built on a 14ha site, which is being compulsorily acquired from market gardeners, on Riverbanks Rd, Angle Vale.
The designs include a mix of single and multistorey buildings, a gym, two ovals, and an array of other sporting fields and courts.
The school will have a capacity of 1675 students – 1500 from Reception to Year 12, plus 100 places for students with disabilities, and 75 places in an early childhood centre.
“This new school will cater for the growing demand for public education in the north of Adelaide and will provide welcome relief for surrounding schools experiencing enrolment demand,” Education Minister John Gardner said.
“The open design of the school will also welcome community use, making them true community assets that local families will have access to for years to come.”
TESA Education, which comprises Tetris Capital, DIF Capital Partners, Sarah Constructions and ISS Facilities Services, has won the public-private partnership contract to build and maintain the Angle Vale school.
The same consortium will also construct and maintain a similar school at Aldinga.
At a combined cost of $261 million, the two schools will open in 2022, which is the year that Year 7 will be shifted from public primary to high schools across the state.
The Angle Vale school has yet to be given a name and a principal will be appointed later this year.
“This new school will provide modern learning environments that have strong connections between internal and external learning spaces, with a strong focus on STEM to help educate students for the jobs of the future,” Mr Gardner said.
Messenger Community News revealed last August that the school would be located at Angle Vale, following speculation that it would be near the Northern Expressway at Munno Para West.
The Angle Vale site belonged to a couple from one of the original Italian families which established market gardens, vineyards, olive groves and almond orchards in the area in the 1950s.
A government spokesman said the compulsorily land had been secured for construction to commence in the first half of this year.”
