A heartbroken school community has paid tribute to teacher Bernice Sternberg who died on the weekend after a horror crash.

A tribute on McLaren Vale Primary’s Facebook page said the community was “very saddened by the loss of our beautiful, kind teacher”.

Mrs Sternberg, 61, of Willunga, died on Sunday after she was involved in a three-car smash at McLaren Vale the weekend before.

“She was an outstanding teacher and held a special place in all of our hearts, she will be deeply missed,” the tribute read.

The school has set up a “remembering space” near the library where students, family and staff can leave flowers, cards and other tributes and spend time remembering Mrs Sternberg.

The flowers and tributes will be passed on to her family at the end of the week.

A whole school assembly will also be held on Friday to pay tribute to Mrs Sternberg.

She was flown to Flinders Medical Centre after the crash on Sunday, March 28, and spent a week fighting for her life before she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday night.

Six other people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver who allegedly caused the crash, a 56-year-old Whyalla man who had already been charged with causing harm by dangerous driving, will have his charge upgraded to causing death.
