Now for something completely different, in a number of ways. We seek a change from festive leftovers, baked ham, pudding, cherries… even in a heatwave, while it seems strange, curries are cool foods.

And, a favourite restaurant, consistently a winner in The Advertiser Food Awards, and now The Advertiser delicious100, has given its Hyde Park restaurant a new street-food feel.

The rebadged Spice Elephant by Cinnamon Club, has fresh paint and art, smart stone, black and terracotta tones, with an elegant elephants mural matching the brightness of some new dishes on a pared-back menu.

A lively start, perhaps at a table out front is in a British Raj or a CC Fireball from the cocktail menu. The Raj is a summery mix of Pimms, gin, passionfruit, mint, lemon and bubbly ginger beer, the Fireball a sterner shake of tequila, cointreau, lemon and cinnamon whisky, both great value at $14.90.

To go-with, puchke twist is finger food with wow factor, from its good looks to all the taste and texture you could want. The moreish set of five impossibly thin, crunchy semolina balls are stuffed with spiced lamb and yoghurt, or there’s a vego version.

Samosa chat is another popular street food of scrambled samosas topped with chutney, and, because the CC team does it so well, we share a dosa between four. It’s arguably the best in Adelaide.

Shared curries are always deeply flavoured with sauces to swipe into torn naan, our favourite the cheesy garlic variety, and the feathery hankerchief-style roomaali roti. Of the new Spice Elephant curries, be sure to try the luscious Peshawari lamb, a mild-to-medium dish with nuts, dried fruits, and regional spices. It’s delicious.

If you manage to have a tummy pocket left to fill, Indian kulfi ice cream, or the sparkling wine poached pears are the refreshers at this time of year.

Nut-free, dairy and gluten-free options abound across the entire menu, with choices from super mild to hot, so CC’s Spice Elephant is ticking all the boxes.
