The husband-wife team behind Spanish restaurant and caterer Comida is taking on their biggest project yet – an Adelaide Hills eatery and garden that can cater for more than 200 guests.
Brad and Fiona Sappenberghs have moved into the former Seasonal Garden Cafe site in Hahndorf’s main strip, and will soon be serving up breakfasts and lunch with the Spanish touch for which they’re renowned.
The pair did, of course, run the popular Comida stall in the Adelaide Central Market for five years to September. They’ve since been serving up tapas, pizzas and bocadillos (Spanish rolls) at city outdoor eatery Roxie’s, in Grenfell St.
And while they’re no strangers to feeding large crowds – they’re a popular catering choice for weddings – juggling two venues will be a new challenge.
“It’s huge,” Brad says about the Hahndorf cafe site.
“We’re going from seating 16 (at the Market) to anywhere over 200.”
The menu will better reflect the dishes they served at the Market, with larger plates to suit local diners.
“We’re obviously going to go down a heavily plant-based menu again, based on local produce and seasonability,” he says.
“We’ll be breaking down whole animals and using every single cut, and jump back on the Fair Fish service (which delivers fresh fish direct from South Australian fisheries).
“Almost all of the guys from the Market have come back to work for me.”
While Comida at Hahndorf is slated to open in January, the team will be serving up paella “and a few other bits and pieces” in the cafe’s garden as part of the Hahndorf Christmas Markets, on December 13-15. The markets are free to stroll and are on from 4pm-10pm each day.
