Popular city cafe My Kingdom for a Horse has opened an espresso bar in the new, multimillion-dollar plaza of 11 Waymouth St, city.

The takeaway coffee and lunch shop is the first of seven tenancies to open on the ground floor of the building, which will also include a flagship restaurant and bar.

Sandwich bar Hello Sarnie will open in July, however the remaining spots remain vacant.

My Kingdom owner Emily Raven said she was excited to bring the cafe’s “friendly, colourful vibe to Waymouth”, following a six-month delay. The outlet was originally slated to open in January, before coronavirus disrupted the industry.

“Waymouth St is still quiet but … we’ve had a great reception,” Raven said. Housed in a shipping container facing Waymouth St, the miniature Kingdom is offering up gourmet toasties including truffled mushroom ragu, a version of the cafe’s famed Rueben and breakfast burritos, as well as salad bowls, such as salmon and falafel (vegan).

“It’s everything that we produce in-house and high quality,” Raven said. “Most of the Wright St team will be across both venues to guarantee consistency.” That team includes head barista Gennie Shi Yun, who will manage the Waymouth St site.

My Kingdom’s opening marks the start of a new meeting and eating hub, which will be overlooked by the new $250m GPO Exchange office tower and a planned Westin hotel. It will also open out to the new Telegraph Lane, linking Waymouth and Franklin streets.

Letting agents CBRE’s Julia Pottinger said she had received interest for the 180 sqm restaurant space, but they were still waiting for the “right” tenant.

My Kingdom for a Horse at 11 Waymouth St is open Mon-Fri, 7am-4pm.
