Leeroy’s is Adelaide’s only cereal cafe, serving up nostalgia in a bowl on Morphett St

Forget bacon and eggs for breakfast. This new Adelaide cafe is serving up a little something you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else – and it’s bound to make you smile.

A new city cafe is serving up bowlfuls of happiness with a sprinkling of nostalgia – one shake of the box at a time.

Leeroy’s, in Morphett St, is Adelaide’s only cafe dedicated to American breakfast cereals – think Cheerio’s, Cocoa Pebbles and Lucky Charms. And it’s been brought to life by hospitality folk and mates, George Rhigas, Bojan Gasic and Emmanuel Tsacos.

Mr Rhigas, 25, said he was inspired by a similar idea in London, but “rounded out” the offering for locals with toasted sandwiches and quality coffee.

“It’s a simple concept; just bringing it back to basics,” said Mr Rhigas, 25, who has a decade of experience as a barista and in operating cafes.

“We’re playing off that old school, sort of 50s American vibe.”

Breathing new life into the pokey space – floor space just 24sq m – was more than just a fun project for the young entrepreneur.

“My great grandfather was a barber here,” Mr Rhigas said. Among the collection of framed photographs on the cafe’s wall is one of his great grandfather, Hercules, as a baby.

“He cut hair here for, like, 70 years,” he said. “It’s just been sitting empty.”

The three owners fit out the shop themselves and developed a toastie menu to rival the best in town, from a sopressa, chilli oil, honey and cheese number, to the house favourite goat’s curd, toasted walnut, rosemary, honey and a secret butter. Those are $12, while a bowl of cereal is $7.

But who’s Leeroy?

“We were trying to work out a name and we were all at my place for dinner, and my fiance yept yelling out my dog’s name, Leeroy... we thought, that actually sounds pretty good!”

The cafe is at 315 Morpehtt St in the city.
