The cheese will be gooey, the beer frothy and the chocolate – well, that’ll just be delicious.
Adelaide’s favourite foodie festival dedicated to the good stuff – CheeseFest+FERMENT – is on this weekend, celebrating all things cheese, chocolate, beer, wine, charcuterie, bread and more. It’s food and drink that undergo a little process called fermentation – a not-so-sexy word for an oh-so-tasty result.
Mitch Lloyd of Woodside Cheese Wrights and son of renowned festival director, Kris, is managing the event for the first time.
“I’ve been involved in the event since its inception, 12 years ago, from when I was younger handing out glasses – now I’m event managing the whole thing,” the senior cheesemaker says.
“Kris started Woodside in the 90s and I was born in ‘93, so I’ve grown up eating a lot of cheese. I never thought I’d be working there … but I fell in love with it.
“The whole process is quite magical, and pretty fulfilling to see yourself create a product.”
While the festival in Rymill Park traditionally celebrates local producers, this year it will feature goods from around the globe in the new Italian, French and Spanish “quarters”.
Sparkke will be among the craft breweries quenching people’s thirsts, along with local distilleries and wineries. Designated drivers can opt for kombucha, boutique tea or a sparkling fermented raw honey drink.
Food will include everything from Abbots & Kinney pastries to restaurant dishes from the award-winning Salopian Inn.
There will also be wine masterclasses ($99, includes entry) and cooking demonstrations, including by TV personality and cookbook author, Matt Preston.
Tickets cost $25 or $40 for both Saturday and Sunday, cheesefest.com.au
