By Blackbird patisserie and bakery reopens in Hutt St, Adelaide, after a year hiatus

They took a year off to spend quality time with their young kids – now, Adelaide pastry chef Chakey Kim and her partner Jin Lim have reopened the doors to By Blackbird in a new spot.

By Blackbird bakery and patisserie is back. Korean-born, French pastry chef Chakey Kim and her partner Jin Lim, who together built a loyal fan base at their original home in King William Rd, have opened a new site in Adelaide’s Hutt St.

And while it’s takeaway-only for now, the pair is confident of reaching the same heights as they did before they decided to take a year hiatus.

“We finished our five-year lease, and we thought it was an opportune time to take a break and spend time with our young kids,” says Jin. “We knew in our hearts we’d get back into things.”

The pair held a successful pop-up over Easter and have since been testing their oven for perfect croissant baking. Jin says they didn’t decide to open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but “it’s more like coronavirus decided to happen when we decided to open”.

“It relieves the pressure in some ways, because it’s takeaway-only and we can only have so many people coming and going,” Jin says. “We’re happy to see everyone again and happy to deliver the same quality stuff that we know we bake.”

While the former florist space is slightly smaller, regulars will recognise the communal table at the front of the cafe (although they can’t dine at it, just yet).
