Adelaide Central Market launches new order and collection service, so shoppers don’t need to leave their cars

In what could be the state’s first “drive-by” market, Adelaide Central Market shoppers can now pre-order their produce and collect it without leaving their cars.

Adelaide Central Market shoppers can stock up for Easter without hopping out of their cars, thanks to a new “drive-by” set-up.

The pre-order and collect service allows people to phone through their orders with individual market traders, which Central Market staff will then collate and carry out to a designated pick-up point in Gouger St, where they will load shoppers’ cars.

Shoppers this week can order up until 11am Thursday, April 8, to collect between 2pm-6pm.

Adelaide Central Market general manager Jodie Kannane said the service would help move the “significant amount of fresh produce and pantry essentials available in the market” to members of the public who are no longer out shopping due to COVID-19.

“Like all shopping precincts, trade has changed,” Ms Kannane said.

“We’re supporting local producers and the network of small businesses. We’ll do everything we can to get that trade to continue.”

Ms Kannane said the three months of free rent provided to market traders through the City of Adelaide had opened a window of opportunity for traders. Several are now trialling home delivery, including Dough, which is also offering a “personal shopper” service for $20.

There is no charge for the market’s pre-order and collect service. Dough’s Sam Bentley said it was a “fantastic opportunity to be able to work together with the Adelaide Central Market to get our amazing produce to our customers”.

“Any initiative that achieves this is a welcome one,” he said.

From next week, collection days will be Tuesday and Friday, but orders can be placed at any time – up until 11am for same-day collection. To place an order, shoppers need to contact indivual traders direct, confirm their details and advise of their pick-up time, between 2pm-6pm.

Multiple orders will be grouped together for pick-up, in front of Zuma Caffe and Marino Meats Food Store in Gouger St. For more information and list of traders, visit adelaidecentralmarket.com.au
