International hotel chain Wyndham will manage a $42m resort on the Yorke Peninsula after signing a franchise agreement with its developer.

Monopoly Property Group recently kicked off work on the project, which will include 100 villas, swimming pools, tennis courts, a function centre, luxury cinema and gym.

Mantra Group had previously agreed to manage the resort, but following delays to the project and Accor's acquisition of Mantra in 2018, the group pulled out of the project.

Wyndham is the world’s largest hotel franchise with 20 brands and more than 9200 hotels in 80 countries.

The Yorke Peninsula resort will be known as Wyndham Wallaroo Shores Resort, and will become one of the state’s first Wyndham-branded hotels when it opens in 2023.

“Having Wyndham Hotels & Resorts as a collaborator for the development is a strong vote of confidence in South Australia’s regional tourism,” Monopoly Property Group chief executive Alex Paior said.

“Given the location and style of our resort, we feel that the upscale Wyndham brand is a strong choice and a great fit for us.”

Construction at Wallaroo Shores started earlier this year, six years after Monopoly acquired the former Incitec Pivot fertiliser works.

Last year Monopoly blamed a visa backlog for delays to construction of the project after earlier lobbying the state government and federal MPs to help fast-track business visas for foreign investors buying villas in the complex.

The resort will become one of Wyndham’s first hotels in South Australia. Last year the group unveiled plans for a $90m Ramada hotel in Elizabeth and a $35m TRYP hotel in the Adelaide CBD.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts Asia Pacific president Joon Aun Ooi said the Wallaroo complex would become a favourite for holiday-makers and corporate retreats.

“Wyndham Wallaroo Shores Resort is an exciting development and we are proud to introduce our Wyndham brand to South Australia with a premium resort product set along one of Australia’s most beautiful coastlines,” he said.

The Wallaroo resort represents the first stage of a $220m housing and resort project across 18.5ha of waterfront land.

It will include more than 600 houses, as well as a commercial precinct with medical centre, offices, cafes and retail outlets.

The project is expected to generate more than 1000 jobs during construction and 2200 ongoing jobs.
