Work is to begin in October on a sparkling $90 million hotel in northern Adelaide to complement an expected upsurge in population and jobs as the area experiences an infrastructure boom.

Demolition has already taken place on a site in central Elizabeth to make way for a 205-room Ramada hotel with many contractors already engaged. A tender for the builder will take place shortly.

The nearest hotel to the centre of Playford is currently the Quest hotel at Mawson Lakes, about 14 kilometres away, which is believed to have a near-full, midweek occupancy rate.

The Ramada by Wyndham Playford, at Lot 2 Playford Boulevard, is expected to open its doors to the public in the first three months of 2021 and is within easy walking distance of the Civic Centre and Shedley Theatre, Prince George Plaza, Grenville Hub and Playford Arena.

Playford’s geographical position as the gateway city to the northern regional areas of South Australia was pivotal to Wyndham’s decision to put down roots there, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts managing director, South-East Asia, Joon Aun Ooi, said.

“We are proud to have a hotel of this calibre as the first Ramada by Wyndham hotel for SA reflecting the standards of excellence the brand is renowned for worldwide,” he said.

“The hotel will provide the perfect base for visitors to Adelaide’s booming north.”

Facilities will include a swimming pool, gym, restaurant and sports bar, along with meeting and conference spaces.

“The development will set a benchmark for the planned infrastructure to take place across the city over the next five years,” said Andrew Russell-Price, managing director of Playford City Hotel, the development owner.

Playford’s population is expected to expand from 96,000 to 135,000 by 2036. The hotel’s launch will coincide with a significant expansion of Playford’s infrastructure, including the $885 million Northern Connector expressway.

Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty said the hotel would become “an iconic landmark in our CBD”.

“For our community it is not just a hotel, it is a symbol of our future economic prosperity and the opportunities that it represents,” he said.

Playford City Hotel has appointed Carlo Pennino of KM/H Architects, a boutique SA architect firm which undertakes projects in various sectors including corporate, education, civic, hospitality and master planning.

Consulting and asset management services are being provided by Adelaide boutique advisory firm, Hotellerie.
