Retail giant Amazon has announced a hiring spree in Australia and no experience is required.

The online company that opened its first fulfilment centre in Australia in 2017 is now looking for more than 1000 seasonal workers to help cope with higher demand during mid-yearly sales.

The casual roles are at fulfilment centres and logistics sites in Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane and involve packing, sorting and posting orders.

Roles advertised on recruitment website SEEK include an FC Associate at Amazon’s robotic fulfilment centres with no experience required, training provided and the starting rate is $28.80 an hour plus penalties.

Successful applicants will be required to complete a drug and alcohol test and police check.

Amazon is also looking for Aussies to join its Amazon Flex team.

The set-up works similar to Uber where workers chose the block of time that suits them to deliver packages on behalf of Amazon and they get paid weekly to do it.

The recruitment drive comes as many Australians are looking for ways to earn more cash during the cost of living crisis.

The fulfilment centres have attracted Aussie stars as employees in the past. In 2021 James Mathison, who famously co-hosted Australian Idol with Osher Gunsberg was spotted working at one in Sydney’s northern beaches.

Amazon announced in March that 9000 jobs would be slashed in its tech sector.

It came just two months after Amazon cut 18,000 roles, back in January, which at the time represented six per cent of Amazon’s workforce and also its largest redundancies in the firm’s history.

The cuts that were made were mainly concentrated in Amazon’s web, HR and advertising team. Staff who look after Amazon’s foray into Twitch livestreaming were also impacted.

CEO Andy Jassy said the decision was made to ensure the company remained “streamlined” as tough market conditions bite across the globe.

“Given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount,” Mr Jassy said in a company-wide email that has since been shared online.
