Details are trickling out about Jeff Bezos’s brand new, half-a-billion dollar superyacht after it first set sail earlier this year — including a prominent sculptural detail modelled off his topless girlfriend.

The triple-masted Koru — considered the tallest sailing yacht in the world — set sail on behalf of the billionaire Amazon founder earlier this week as it cruised the Mediterranean around Mallorca.

The 417-foot (127 metre) vessel first left Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where its construction was completed, in February. It was quickly taken out for a spin by Bezos and his girlfriend, former Fox News personality Lauren Sanchez, who dropped anchor off the coast of Spain where the boat was readily on display.

Perhaps the most bizarre detail is the yacht’s figurehead — a sculptural detail at the bow of large sailing ships, traditionally thought to protect them at sea. Koru’s figurehead is a topless sculpture modelled off of Sanchez, who is depicted leading the yacht, clutching a necklace as her long hair flows behind.

Koru’s huge 229-foot (70 metre) masts power it to 20 knots, making it the largest yacht owned by a billionaire that can move by sail-power alone.

Its support vessel, Abeona, is a mega-boat in its own right. Luxurious fast-launches are used to move between the two ships, with aerial support provided by Sanchez’s personal helicopter.

Bezos and Sanchez were spotted, swimwear-clad, last week, relaxing on the $US500 million ($A751 million) ship.

The couple are reportedly recently engaged after a five-year romance, and four years after their affair was revealed in the billionaire’s messy divorce hearings.

Rumours that the couple have got engaged have been swirling for months — mostly due to speculation about a massive heart-shaped ring Sanchez wears — but this week Page Six firmed up the whispers, revealing they were wedding planning.

Sanchez, 53, wore a pink bikini and white cover-up as she padded across the deck during the outing, while Bezos donned pale blue board shorts and a cream jacket.

Koru, which boasts a helipad and pool, can accommodate up to 18 guests, but the couple was spotted sailing solo.

Construction on the vessel began in 2018 after Bezos put down half a billion dollars to acquire it. Dutch officials considered dismantling the historic Koningshaven Bridge to allow Koru to pass through, but the plan was ditched after uproar from residents.

Instead, Koru was towed away from its construction location to another shipyard without its masts. The move was reportedly made under the cover of darkness.
