Solar panel manufacturer Tindo Solar and visual effects company Rising Sun Pictures are among finalists in this year’s South Australian Premier’s Business and Export Awards, which include a new category for businesses that promote gender equity in their workplace.

More than 300 nominations were entered in this year’s awards program – run by the South Australian Business Chamber and the state government – across 26 categories.

The awards recognise the contribution of local businesses to the social, environmental, and economic wellbeing of the state, with categories celebrating the achievements of a variety of businesses including emerging, regional, family and indigenous enterprises.

Winners across 12 business award categories and 14 export categories will be announced at a gala event in October.

SA Business Chamber chief executive Andrew Kay said it was the second year of the revamped awards program, which replaced the former South Australian Export Awards which were previously held prior to Covid-19.

“The bar was set very high last year, and pleasingly, we have seen this trend continue,” he said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and celebrate South Australian businesses who are innovating and challenging themselves to be better, year after year.”

This year’s awards line-up includes a new category – The Governor’s Award for Business Achievement in Gender Equity.

Mr Kay said Governor Frances Adamson’s support for the issue was a key factor in the award’s introduction.

All finalists will also be considered for the two major awards – South Australian Business of the Year and South Australian Exporter of the Year. Last year’s major award winners were baby formula company Mumamoo and electronics manufacturer Redarc.

Rising Sun Pictures has been named an export award finalist for a second consecutive year after taking out the creative industries category at last year’s event.

President Jennie Zeiher said the company, which was founded close to 30 years ago, currently employed 350 staff, and had become one of the “go-to visual effect vendors for Hollywood studios”.

“RSP is a proud ambassador of South Australia, showcasing our ability to deliver world-class projects, fostering international collaborations that benefit not only RSP, but the industry and state,” she said.

“It is humbling to be a finalist in the South Australian Export Awards; from the little South Aussie brand that could, to being one of the major go-to vendors for Hollywood studios, working on films like Deadpool and Wolverine, and The Fall Guy.”

Tindo Solar chief executive Richard Petterson said his company’s nomination recognised its collaboration with government, industry, and consumers to help achieve Australia’s net zero ambitions.

Tindo recently unveiled plans for a solar panel ‘gigafactory’, which could manufacture up to 1.9 million solar panels a year.

“We look forward to continuing to strengthen Australia’s domestic sovereignty and providing Australian consumers with the option of locally manufactured solar solutions.”

The awards will be presented at a gala dinner for more than 700 guests at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Friday, October 11.
