Lot Fourteen: Adelaide's new innovation hub

US software giant Salesforce has set up a new hub at the Lot Fourteen innovation precinct, with plans to create 100 new technology jobs.

As part of a five-year growth plan, the company will recruit 50 staff itself, while supporting the employment of an additional 50 technology experts at companies it partners with in the local marketplace.

The San Francisco-based company is the world’s largest provider of customer relationship management (CRM) software, with more than 75,000 employees around the world and providing its software to more than 150,000 business users.

Last year it ranked 137th on the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies in the US, with revenues topping $US17 billion.

Underpinning its growth plans in Adelaide is a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the state government aimed at fast-tracking the state’s transition to net zero emissions.

Using its Net Zero Cloud platform, Salesforce will work with the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML) and Green Industries SA (GISA), to pilot an AI-backed system that helps organisations track and analyse their environmental impact, and then take steps to reduce their emissions.

It is the first collaboration of its kind globally for Salesforce’s Net Zero Cloud platform.

Salesforce Net Zero Cloud head of global distribution Tyler Harnish said the collaboration would deliver tools for both government and the private sector to reduce their emissions.

“We are proud to put technology in the hands of our customers so they can make meaningful decisions about climate action and are excited to partner with the Government of South Australia to help them reach their climate goals,” he said.

“South Australia has a great sustainability track record, and we look forward to working with the South Australian government to set a new benchmark in public accountability reporting for carbon emissions.”

Salesforce launched its first version of Net Zero Cloud in 2019, with the aim of providing businesses with a “360-degree view” of their carbon footprint, and slashing the time needed to measure, report and audit carbon emissions from months down to weeks.

The company currently has a small team working out of Lot Fourteen’s MIT bigdata Living Lab, which brings together public, private and research bodies to analyse “big data” to identify economic growth opportunities for the state.

Premier Steven Marshall said the company’s commitment to growing its presence at Lot Fourteen was another example of a large multinational company seeing the benefits of setting up at the emerging innovation precinct.

“South Australia has the fastest growing economy in the country, the lowest unemployment rate in our history and is now a beacon in attracting global hi-tech companies to Adelaide, with the likes of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Accenture committing to operations in South Australia,” he said.

“South Australia’s green economy has the potential to create thousands of jobs that will help companies and communities all around the globe transition to a net-zero carbon future – and I couldn’t be more excited to embark on this pilot with Salesforce.”

The state government has an ambition for South Australia to be fuelled by net 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and to be net zero emissions by 2050.
