Securing finance remains a major challenge for investors seeking to buy a business in the wake of Covid-19, according to business broker Emily Troon, but demand remains strong from a variety of budding entrepreneurs.

Ms Troon from Dale Wood Business Sales said entrepreneurs, workers wanting to be their own boss and business owners hoping to expand or diversify their investments were fuelling demand for new business opportunities.

“Despite Covid, there are many serious buyers who are seeking profitable businesses with a solid long-term future, and good businesses are selling very quickly in this market, particularly if they are running under management or no specific industry experience is required,” she said.

“We are seeing a large number of business owners choosing to retire or sell after a difficult 12 months. This is presenting some excellent business opportunities for buyers, however finance can be very difficult to obtain.”

Ms Troon, who is currently selling the iconic GC’s pickled onions business, said food production was an industry currently favoured by investors, alongside other sectors including transport, cleaning, recycling and construction.

“There’s lots of interest in strong businesses that have rebounded quickly from the lockdowns, including local tourism and hospitality which are booming due to South Australians spending their money locally,” she said.

“And also businesses that have performed consistently throughout the pandemic, including some food, manufacturing, transport, home improvement and trades businesses.”

Other new business listings include boutique wineries in the Barossa and Coonawarra, and several country pubs.

GC’S HOME STYLE PICKLED ONIONS

The 40-year manufacturer of pickled treats offers buyers the opportunity to invest in a long-established and iconic South Australian brand.

Known for its much-loved recipe for home-style pickled onions, including spiced, hot spiced and mint varieties, the business has recently expanded its product offering to include pickled red cabbage and sliced beetroot.

Dale Wood Business Sales broker Emily Troon said the brand had a loyal customer base and long-term relationships with distributors and retailers.

“Considered by many to be Australia’s leading pickled onion brand, GC are the initials of the original business owner who started the business around 40 years ago and passed on the treasured family recipe to the current owner,” she said.

“GC’s is already loved by many pickled onion connoisseurs, so this is a prime opportunity for a creative thinker to further leverage an already established South Australian food manufacturing brand through strategic sales and marketing.”

Ms Troon said the business would suit an existing food brand or owner-operator, with no food manufacturing experience required.

“The brand is already acclaimed, so there is massive potential to leverage the name into other products or to increase production and sales of the existing products,” she said.

“The business currently operates during the onion season in November to May, so there is potential to further develop the revenue from pickled winter vegetables during the off-season.”

The current owner has managed the business for more than 20 years and is seeking to retire.

ULEYBURY WINES

The multiple award-winning Uleybury Wines will go under the hammer next month, including the family-owned winery, restaurant and function centre.

The boutique winery on Uley Road, Uleybury, has a renovated stone cellar door, restaurant and a 42ha vineyard.

Formerly a thoroughbred horse stud, it was judged to be a five-star winery by critic James Halliday in 2007.

After buying the land in 1988, owner Tony Pipicella first planted vines at the property in 1995. His son Anthony took over the business in 2017.

It has exported to international buyers for about a decade.

The property also has more than 80ha of grazing land and 120 established olive trees. Uleybury Wines has exported to the UK, Canada, Denmark, China Singapore and Japan, according to website Halliday Wine Companion.

The selling agent says there’s an opportunity to run livestock on the property, including sheep, cattle and horses, while development of short-term accommodation is also an option.

Uleybury Wines will be auctioned on August 26.

RENDLEN RIDGE

The historic homestead and vineyard in the heart of the Barossa comprises a total area of 32.4ha, including about 13ha of Shiraz, Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon grape plantings.

There is further plantable land and a Barossa Infrastructure Ltd allocation for irrigation.

Colliers agribusiness senior executive Nick Goode said Rendlen Ridge was located close to several high-profile wine producers, and only a short distance from the Tanunda township.

“This is an excellent opportunity for a multitude of buyers including locals, industry participants, lifestyle buyers, downsizers and investors to either expand their holdings in the Barossa or secure an established foothold in a world-renowned wine region,” he said.

In addition to the vineyard, the property includes a historic stone bungalow featuring four bedrooms, extensive shedding, garages, workshops and significant frontage to Heinze Rd.

“The expertly established vineyards consistently produce high-quality fruit that has supplied major wine companies for many years,” Mr Goode said.

Expressions of interest close at 2pm on July 29.

A lifestyle opportunity in the Coonawarra wine region offers buyers a business opportunity with multiple income streams.

The boutique 4.4ha vineyard produces award-winning organically grown varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

HOTEL COMMONWEALTH

The historic Hotel Commonwealth was built during the boom years in Port Augusta where 12 hotels were built between 1878 and 1883.

Originally known as the Terminus Hotel, the building was a modification of two shops, and was first granted a licence in 1880.

Described as the “grand old dame” by its selling agent, the hotel includes bar facilities, restaurant and gaming room on the ground floor, and an “underdeveloped” second level.

“This grand old dame known as the Hotel Commonwealth offers the astute entrepreneur a reputable watering hole with untapped potential in the very heart of the Port Augusta CBD,” the selling agent says.

“The second level, four-bedroom residence currently produces zero income and would be well-suited to tourist accommodation, live music and bar or other entertainment facilities.”
