A mix of city and regional dining and hospitality venues continues to dominate new listings of businesses for sale, as the local economy continues its recovery from COVID-19.

The new year has brought new opportunities for South Australians looking to take on a new venture, with a raft of businesses across the state hitting the market in recent weeks.

New listings include a CBD restaurant popular with the corporate crowd, a turf grower near Eden Valley and a Cibo franchise in the heart of one of Adelaide’s cosmopolitan shopping strips.

Dale Wood Business Sales general manager Kent Aughey said inquiries for businesses continued to rise in the wake of COVID-19, particularly for businesses priced between $500,000 and $5m.

“While COVID-19 has caused, and continues to cause, a lot of uncertainty, it has also highlighted the incredible lifestyle and quality of life that South Australia has to offer,” he said.

“This is resulting in particularly strong interest in buying recreational businesses, for example fishing, boating and off road vehicle accessories.

“There’s a strong emphasis on buying Australian made goods, and industry sectors such as agribusiness, specialised manufacturing, food retailing and professional services like financial planning and accounting firms have also been popular with interested buyers.”

NEW LISTINGS

PRANZO

A who’s who of Adelaide’s business world are some of the regulars at Pranzo - tucked away off Pirie Street on Exchange Place.

But the Italian restaurant has struggled to bounce back from the impact of COVID-19 and the absence of city workers from the CBD.

Pranzo cut staff and introduced a take away model in a bid to keep its doors open after the pandemic struck, but now the owners are looking to exit the business.

In March, Pranzo’s co-owners said a dearth of people in the CBD, caused by businesses forcing or allowing their staff to work from home, had crippled the restaurant, leaving them no choice but to walk away.

“We’re essentially in the process of trying to sell our business, and when I say sell, we will be giving it away,” Pranzo co-owner Aaron Martin said at the time.

MARNE VALLEY TURF

The owners of a turf farm east of Eden Valley are looking for buyers after more than 30 years of growing and supplying lawn across the state.

Doug and Diana Fleet have listed the farm for sale with a multimillion dollar price tag, including the business, land, well cared for plant and equipment and a substantial water licence.

After listing the business for sale last month, the Fleets said they wanted someone as passionate about the business as them to take over.

“We won’t be selling the farm to just anyone, we want someone who will come in and look after our staff and the business that we’ve grown for the past 30 years,” Mr Fleet said at the time.

“You don’t need to know about the turf industry because the staff have been here for years and know how to run the day-to-day operations.”

Spanning 65ha, there are 33 grassed ovals growing several different varieties of drought-tolerant, hard wearing instant rollout lawn, including Kikuyu, Santa Anna and Sir Walter Buffalo.

The farm is a wholesale and retail supplier of high quality turf to landscaping business Garden Grove, local councils, sporting clubs and schools.

GIANT GLENELG

The Glenelg outlet of global bike brand Giant Bicycles is on the market, including a retail store and fully equipped workshop.

Operating six days per week, the business comes with an attractive lease, according to the selling agent, and is a licensed Giant agent of mountain bikes, road bikes, children’s bikes and a variety of parts and accessories.

Bike repairs are done in-house at the Anzac Highway premises, with current staff consisting of a manager, two mechanics and two sales staff.

The selling agent says the business has a “solid following in the cycling fraternity”.

“The staff and business model have been optimised over 38 years of trading and have cemented Giant Glenelg as one of Adelaide’s premium cycling centres and workshops.”

CIBO NORWOOD

Another Cibo Espresso bar is on the market, this time on The Parade at Norwood.

It’s the latest in a string of Cibo franchise sales, including at Colonnades, West Lakes and Marion shopping centres, Pirie Street in the city and another outlet in the northern suburbs.

Established in 2004, Cibo Norwood is located at the main entrance of the Norwood Place shopping complex.

New Cibo franchisees require the approval of the franchisor, hospitality group Retail Zoo, and are put through a four-week training course before operating an outlet.

STEIN’S TAPHOUSE

Located in the heart of Nuriootpa, Stein’s Taphouse was opened in 2015 and offers an extensive selection of craft beer in the heart of SA’s premier wine region.

The venue offers 15 taps of Australian craft beers which are continuously rotated, together with local wines and ciders.

Stein’s Taphouse is also recognised as having South Australia’s largest Australian whiskey selection.

Casual American-style food includes burgers, sides and sharing dishes, while the outside deck offers alfresco dining together with regular entertainment from local artists.

The selling agent says the business is ideal for an owner-operator and has reported strong trading results since it was established.

THE PROJECT - ROBE

Funky pizza bar The Project is located on the main street of Robe, in a rustic building with a capacity of 80 customers.

The family-run restaurant runs a thriving takeaway business, according to the selling agent, and is popular with tourists and locals.

The seasonal menu has a focus on local produce sourced from around the Limestone Coast.

An expansive courtyard area is available for small weddings, birthdays and other functions.

The selling agent says a long lease is in place for the business, which has been improving revenue year-on-year.

The home staging and styling specialist was established in 2014, servicing customers across metropolitan Adelaide.

Working closely with real estate agencies, developers and homeowners, the business can provide partial styling of a home right up to a full house of furnishings ahead of a property sale.

The business opened its doors in June 2014 and leased its first warehouse in March 2015. In 2019, the vendor moved the business to its current, larger location in Lonsdale.

The business currently has the capacity to stage more than 50 properties at any one time.

According to the selling agent, the business had generated strong growth over the past four years and has a strong presence in the Adelaide market, particularly in the western and southern suburbs.

SPORTS SIMULATOR

Facing the speed of Mitchell Starc can now be a reality with a unique sports simulator business being offered to sports enthusiasts.

The baseball and cricket simulator comes with the advanced BatFast Simulator technology and all the required equipment.

It is currently located at the X-Golf Marion facility under a revenue sharing agreement.

However the new owner also has the option of running the simulator as a portable events business or creating their own permanent set up.

The selling agent said the simulator had already been used for portable events by the Adelaide Strikers, local schools, kids parties and other events.

The BatFast Simulator enables the user to face balls or pitches from a simulated bowler or pitcher, with speeds ranging between 30km/h and 144km/h.

The sale includes access to a website with booking system and social media pages.

No experience is required, according to the selling agent, and a month-long training program is provided.
