Work will start within weeks on a $50 million aged care complex at the former Football Park site in West Lakes.
UnitingSA has announced it has contracted Kennett Builders to construct the five-storey complex, with work due to begin late this month.
Apartments will go on sale early next year, and residents are expected to move in by the end of 2020.
About 400 people will work on the project during construction and once complete, it will create ongoing jobs for about 150 people.
The complex forms part of the part of the broader, $1 billion WEST housing and retail development on the former SANFL-owned site, being managed by Commercial & General.
Once complete, the precinct, formerly the home of AFL in Adelaide, will feature about 1600 homes.
Uniting SA’s aged care centre will include 125 private rooms and apartments and an 18-bed memory support unit for people with dementia.
There will also be an “active street frontage” including a cafe, hairdresser and allied health services, which will be open to the public.
Kennett Builders director of corporate and strategy, James Kennett, said the “visionary” project would reinvigorate the oval site and provide a home and support for people as they aged.
“Being able to build developments with a positive social impact really ignites the passion of our dedicated team,” Mr Kennett said.
UnitingSA chief executive Libby Craft said the partnership with Kennett Builders reflected a shared vision to provide quality accommodation that enhanced communities.
“Between us we have 205 years of experience and we are excited to come together to create a development that puts aged care at the centre of a vibrant community,” Ms Craft said.
“UnitingSA West Lakes will provide high quality accommodation for older South Australians, while supporting them to maintain an active lifestyle and community connections.”
Construction work at the WEST housing development began in late 2016, three years after Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs began playing in town.
