MORE than $26 million has been invested in Tonsley Village, as the 850-home housing development begins to take shape.
A year after sales began, developer PEET says 95 apartments and terrace homes are under construction – up to 25 per cent of the 11ha development.
A further 50 blocks have been sold or released to the market, as part of the project’s second and third stages.
The $265 million housing development is under construction at the former Mitsubishi car manufacturing site, off South Rd, which is also home to a Flinders University campus, TAFE branch, and a range of businesses in Tonsley’s Main Assembly Building.
The first residents will move in towards the middle of this year, including Nicholas McMahon, who has bought a three-storey home.
“I think it’s going to be a really vibrant community – a more social, inclusive neighbourhood,” Mr McMahon said. PEET is now designing a village green and the development’s other public spaces.
The company expects the project to be complete in 2025, with the development eventually becoming home to about 1200 residents in terraces and apartments.
PEET managing director Brendan Gore said the Tonsley Village celebrated Adelaide’s history and was supported by strong transport connections and proximity to education centres.
“We paid careful attention to how the residential precinct integrates with the existing neighbourhood and broader Tonsley Innovation District,” Mr Gore said.
The company has approval to construct 850 homes in buildings up to four storeys high, but has said it may consider seeking additional approval for further homes in buildings up to seven storeys.
