Construction is set to begin on a $19m function and event centre at the Morphettville racecourse
Local SA construction firm Kennett has been selected by the South Australian Jockey Club to deliver the project, which will replace the former Gerard Pavilion following its demolition last year.
The Morphettville Event Centre (MEC) will cater for up to 1150 guests, almost double the capacity of the Gerard Pavilion, and will be used for events ranging from boardroom lunches to large corporate events, race day functions and weddings.
The trackside building has been designed without internal pillars, providing guests with uninterrupted panoramic views of the racecourse, city and Adelaide Hills.
SAJC chief executive Grant Mayer said the MEC would provide much-needed event space in Adelaide’s western suburbs, and would generate income for the SAJC to reinvest in its core operations.
“Careful design has ensured we are maximising the available space to create what will arguably be the largest and most modern conference, function and event facility west of the CBD,” he said.
“We are committed to re-energising and modernising Morphettville through strategic investment for the benefit of our members, the state and local community, and the Morphettville Event Centre is a key pillar of that vision.
“The venue will not only strengthen Morphettville’s position as a leading racing and entertainment destination but will also play a valuable part in supporting South Australia’s major event and tourism economy.”
The SAJC is also in final talks with a preferred development partner to help bring to life its $500m redevelopment vision for the racecourse site.
The club confirmed it was in the final stages of negotiations with its preferred development partner, understood to be Victorian-based group Villawood Properties, to help deliver the project.
It will involve developing up to 10ha of land between the racetrack and Anzac Highway, with a mix of apartments, townhouses, offices, a hotel, supermarket, retail and hospitality outlets.
Designed by Cox Architecture, the MEC will accommodate up to 300 seated guests on the ground floor and up to 600 seated guests on an upper level. The maximum standing-room capacity of the building will be 1150.
The existing administration centre at Morphettville will be upgraded and incorporated into the MEC building.
Kennett has completed several sport infrastructure projects in recent years including the recent Memorial Drive redevelopment and the upgrade of Karen Rolton Oval in the Adelaide Park Lands.
Civil construction for the MEC is expected to begin within weeks, with the project expected to be completed in the second half of 2023.
