Concept pictures showcasing what the second stage of the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre redevelopment will look like have been released.
Construction work on the $44m project will begin next month, the State Government says.
Sport Minister Corey Wingard said the upgrade would create a “world-class venue that can accommodate a range of sporting and entertainment events”.
“The project includes two new spectator stands to the east and north of centre court with new seating with great sightlines, food and beverage facilities and enhanced amenity,” he said.
Premier Steven Marshall said the investment in Memorial Drive was a “game-changer” for the state.
“Investing in this precinct is positioning South Australia perfectly to be able to attract and host more events like A Day at the Drive – the first tennis event in front of a crowd in close to 12 months,” he said.
“Tennis events over the next decade are going to drive jobs, vibrancy in our city and will inspire the next generation of South Australian tennis enthusiasts to play and train right here at home – and we couldn’t be more excited.”
Stage two, funded during the State Budget in November last year, is expected to be event-ready by the Adelaide International in January next year, while the entire project is due for completion in mid-2022.
The first stage of the redevelopment was a $10 million roof upgrade.
Meanwhile, tickets to the Women’s Tennis Association Adelaide International, played at Memorial Drive from February 22-27, go on sale via Ticketmaster on Wednesday.
The tournament will feature world-class players such as two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka.
