The young guns shaking up agribusiness

Words: Camille SmithProducer: Bianca Mastroianni

For more than a decade, the agriculture industry has been on a mission to attract more young people. And the message finally seems to be clicking.

These are the young guns destined to shake up the industry on both sides of the farm gate.

They come from one of Australia’s top wine families, but these sisters have put in the work to establish themselves and evolve the Brown Brothers brand for a new era.

EMMA BROWN, 34, CAROLINE BROWN, 37, KATHERINE BROWN, 39

Already, they've renamed the company the Brown Family Wine Group, diversified into vineyards in Tasmania and launched a new non-alcoholic wine range.

Boyle, a 26-year-old former agribusiness analyst, recently returned to the family farm at Watchem, where he classes himself as “just a farmhand”.

JOE BOYLE, 26

While learning the ropes of farming, he advocates on issues, from climate change to worker shortages and recent regulations related to on-farm manure use.

Dairy farmer Tom Middlebrook works with his father running 450 milking cows at Gloucester, NSW. Hard hit by the millennium drought, he puts in huge effort to make the most of their resources.

He's implemented moisture probes to optimise irrigation in real time, and among other projects, is planning to add a methane digester to make biogas.

With a PhD and degree in animal science, Dr Danila Marini is a CSIRO experimental scientist and animal ethics co-ordinator, working with sheep and technology.

Equally importantly, Danila recognises the hurdles for women and gender diverse people in all industries, including agriculture.
