Saleyards handle millions of livestock each year and while they are big business, they are still mostly owned and managed by local councils

These are some of the big players in the sector.

MARANOA SHIRE COUNCIL

The country’s largest cattle saleyard based in Roma, Queensland, often hits the headlines for its record-breaking sales. In 2020-21, 239,224 cattle were sold.

AAM INVESTMENT GROUP

In 2007, the company started running a portfolio of livestock selling facilities. It now handles more than 820,000 cattle and 2,340,000 sheep annually.

DISTRICT COUNCIL OF GRANT

The Mount Gambier saleyard in South Australia is owned by the local council. In 2020-21 70,587 cattle and 119,758 sheep were sold.

CITY OF GREATER BENDIGO

The saleyard has the second lowest cattle sales in Victoria, but makes up for it in sheep sales. In 2020-21, 923,701 sheep were sold.

VIC LIVESTOCK EXCHANGE

The Exchange owns two saleyards, Leongatha and Pakenham. In 2020-21 Leongatha was the largest cattle seller in Victoria, with 142,634 head sold. Pakenham sold 121,752 cattle.

FORBES SHIRE COUNCIL

Owned by the council, the Central West Livestock Exchange in Forbes, NSW, sold  859,429 sheep and 32,973 cattle last year.
