Lost and found: The mystery of the vanishing $108k bull

He's the $108,000 Kelly Angus bull than mysteriously vanished before turning up in a bizarre crowd weeks later, leaving farmers scratching their heads.

Texas Powerplay P163 garnered national attention after he vanished from Kelly’s Angus stud near Yea in Victoria’s North East early in January.

One of the most expensive bulls in Australia, a helicopter was even brought in to search for the 1000kg animal, considered a leading sire in the industry.

In a strange twist, two weeks later on January 17, Powerplay turned up just 3km from home. Kelly Angus manager Patrick Joyce said he had a slight leg injury but passed a vet check.

A local farmer had spotted him in his paddock, sitting under a tree with about 80 heifers, after he got off a call with Mr Joyce.

How the bull got there has baffled locals. He would have had to get through five fences, traverse a paddock of yearling bulls and then swim the Yea River, Mr Joyce said.

It is just unexplainable because he is a quiet bull, not a fence jumper. We really have no idea how he ended up there – we are just amazed and so thankful that we have him back.

Police looked into the bull's vanishing act, stating the circumstances were not clear, "And we need to satisfy ourselves that this bull did not leave the property under his own steam".

However he got there, Powerplay was trucked back to Kelly Angus headquarters and was given a good feed of silage as he was “very hungry”.

We will keep him here with his two mates for the next couple of months and then he will go up to the semen centre to be collected. He was certainly happy to get back home.
