How to spend a weekend in Lakes Entrance

Grace McKinnon

Whether you’re travelling with the kids, seeking adventure or a quiet retreat, here is the best way to spend time in Lakes Entrance

The water-front town brings in tourists all year round with warmer temperatures than Melbourne and activities for every style of visitor.

If you’re driving from Melbourne, stop along the way in Lindenow to lunch at The Long Paddock. Make sure to view the desserts first — you won’t want to miss their famous cakes cabinet.

Before you hit the highway visit Lightfoot Wines for a tasting or to take a bottle with you for your weekend vacation. The Gippsland region is known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Shiraz.

Lakes Entrance has a range of accommodation from serviced apartments and retro motels to glamping and AirBnb — many are pet friendly.

For the keen treasure hunter there are many boutique items waiting to be found in local secondhand bookshops and antique stores

The Lakes Entrance Surf Club Foreshore Market runs on the first Sunday of the month. Shop for local food, art, crafts and produce.

Have a crack at the adventurous water sports on offer with kayaks and boats for hire. Take a fishing rod out on a low speed boat — no boat licence required.

If fishing is too DIY for your liking take a stroll to the marina and pick out the day’s catch at the Fresh Prawns & Fish boat. Caught each night, the fresh seafood does not get better than this. It opens from 7am.

Take a walk across the landmark footbridge which links the town centre with the Bass Strait coastline. For a longer stroll take the scenic coastal 5km walk.

The Wyanga Park Winery is hidden in the hills just outside of town. It's a perfect location to have a hearty meal, enjoy a wine tasting or relax on the grass.

A 40 minute drive from the Lakes area, the Buchan Caves Reserve and tour are not to be missed. View the mesmerising limestone formations carved out by an underground river almost 400 million years ago.
