Farmers fear changes to worker visas will leave them high and dry

Farmers are fearing worker shortages will plague the sector once again ahead of sweeping changes to a Pacific Island labour scheme and mooted plans to shelve a longstanding requirement for backpackers to work regionally. The first sign of a shift away from the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility program has emerged with new Department of Employment and Work Relations data showing an 11 per cent drop in the number of PALM workers employed in agriculture between June last year and January this year, from 28,352 to 25,134.National Farmers’ Federation Horticulture Council chair Jolyon Burnett said the figures reflect the beginning of a trend away from PALM ahead of changes come July including paying workers a fixed weekly rate for nine months, pay parity with domestic workers and portability.
