Woorinen enters recess in seniors this season
A country footy team who made the grand final two years ago and a preliminary final in 2024 will now not enter a senior team this season. Here is what we know.
A lack of player numbers has seen one of Central Victoria Football League’s strongest sides, Woorinen, go into recess for this season.
The club announced on Monday night it would enter recess only a few months after making the preliminary final.
“The Woorinen Football Netball Club would like to inform our members and supporters of the heartbreaking decision for our Women’s Football team to enter into a recess,” the statement said.
“We look forward to supporting our amazing Youth Girls team in the 2025 season, and have high hopes that the Women’s team will be back in the future.”
Central Victoria Football League operations manager Paul Colbert said while the seniors would not field a team for 2025, Woorinen would remain in the under-18 competition.
“It’s a bit unfortunate for them considering how strong they’ve been over the past couple of years,” he said.
“It’s a numbers thing at this stage.
“They are very strong in the under-18s with their younger players but unfortunately haven’t been able to generate the numbers at senior level this year.”
Colbert said the competition would now reorganise the draw with Woorinen’s absence reducing the teams from nine to eight.
Two options have been sent around to the remaining clubs.
He was hopeful the team would be back in 2026.
“It’s something we’ll keep in regular contact throughout the season with the club to see where they sit with things going forward,” Colbert said.
“We’re confident next season they will be looking to put the team on the park again.”
