Seasoned Tops-Alexander in Olympics Games equestrian squad
Australia has named a strong showjumping team to participate in the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
The Australian Olympic Committee has finally announced the Showjumping team for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
All equestrian team members for Tokyo 2020 have now been selected, despite a protest from a non-selected rider in the Showjumping team.
The selected combinations are Jamie Kermond and Yandoo Oaks Constellation, owned by Kerrie Winning. Groom, Cody Mulder will accompany this combination. Katie Laurie and Casebrooke Lomond, owned by Katie and Jackson Laurie with Sheena Ross. Groom, Ashlyn Cuku. Edwina Tops-Alexander and her own Identity Vitseroel. Groom, Reesa Pihu.
The travelling reserve combination is Rowan Willis and Blue Movie, owned by Rowan, David and Elsa Willis, Renee Willis, Michael and Wendy Jackson and Warren Coventry. His groom is Robert Buniowski
Katie Laurie (McVean) will become the first Olympic showjumper to represent Australia whose parent has also represented Australia in the same discipline at an Olympics games. Jeff McVean represented Australia at the Los Angeles Games in 1984 and Seoul in 1988.
Laurie is no stranger to international competition and although Tokyo 2020 will be her first Olympics for Australia, Laurie represented New Zealand at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Edwina Tops-Alexander needs no introduction and her record representing her country is quite outstanding.
Tops-Alexander’s first Australian team was the 2002 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez followed by WEG 2006 in Aachen, Germany, 2008 Beijing Olympics, WEG 2010 in Kentucky, 2012 London Olympics, WEG 2014 in Normandy and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Jamie Kermond was also on the 2006 Aachen WEG team riding Stylish King. He has since competed at the 2014 WEG in Normandy and the 2018 WEG in Tryon.
Kermond said of finally making an Olympic team, “I’m excited for the chance to represent my country at the highest level, it’s been a dream of mine and I am extremely proud to have this opportunity”.
