Player points: Josh Caddy plays as an eight-pointer for St Arnaud

The player points system has been in place since 2016 and is still throwing up plenty of curve balls for clubs. See the latest.

Dual Richmond premiership player Josh Caddy has set a new record for the player points system since its inception in country football almost a decade ago.

In his one-off match for North Central league club St Arnaud against Birchip-Watchem late last month, Caddy played as an eight-pointer.

Former Geelong and Gold Coast champ Gary Ablett Junior lined up for Drouin in the Gippsland league last year as a seven-pointer and another recently retired AFL player, Jackson Trengove, also played as a seven-pointer for Southern Mallee Giants and Mooroopna in 2022.

Caddy is still classed as a six-pointer because he played at AFL level in the past three years and attracted more points because he has played with Richmond’s VFL team and two community clubs since 2022.

St Arnaud president David Wandel said Caddy had a family tie to the club and in addition to playing for the club on April 27, he also did a sports night with former Melbourne Storm premiership player Will Chambers.

Chambers also played for St Arnaud as a three-point player.

Meanwhile, Yarrawonga has successfully applied for a reassessment of the points attached to former North Melbourne and Hawthorn player Dan Howe.

He played as a five-pointer for the first time in Yarrawonga’s last match after being a six-pointer in the four previous rounds.

But Yarrawonga is still fighting to have Howe become a one-pointer given he played five seasons for the club in the Albury-Wodonga Junior Football League between 2006 and 2011.

Yarrawonga played at its maximum 40 points in a thrilling win against Wangaratta and 39 the following match when Howe had his points downgraded by one against Corowa-Rutherglen.

Former AFL players playing on six points this season include Ben Cunnington (Warrnambool), Lochie O’Brien (Wangaratta Rovers) and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Imperials).
