Ovens and King: Greta on top and undefeated after nine rounds

Ovens and King League leaders Greta remain undefeated this season after securing a dramatic seven-point win against Bright.

Greta is poised for its best shot at an Ovens and King league premiership since its last flag in 1999 with a second win over one of its major finals rivals on Saturday.

A month ago the Blues beat last year’s runner-up, Bonnie Doon, by seven points and last round beat Bright by the same margin with both victories being recorded as the away team.

Greg Newbold is in his seventh season as coach of Greta after previously coaching Yackandandah in the Tallangatta league.

Last season the Blues bowed out in the second week of finals.

Greta is undefeated after nine rounds with first-year player Lachie Kennett in the best players for the seventh time this season and another recruit, James McClounan, starring across half-forward.

McClounan joined Greta from Wangaratta where he played in the Magpies’ successful second semi-final team before being squeezed out for the grand final.

He previously played in the Ovens and King league for Milawa in 2018 when he kicked 94 goals.

Greta led Bright by two goals at three-quarter time with a wasteful Bright kicking 0.6 in the last term while the Blues held to only one point.

Second-placed Bonnie Doon’s only loss this season has been to Greta, but the two clubs aren’t drawn to play again in the home and away rounds.
