Northern Rivers Project team starts consultations with Golden Rivers and Central Murray clubs
Ultima’s push to change leagues has gained fresh momentum as meetings with clubs involved in Northern Rivers Project start.
Ultima has reaffirmed its desire to change leagues next year as face-to-face meetings with Central Murray and Golden Rivers clubs about the future structure of the region kick off this week.
Ultima’s failed move from the Golden Rivers to Central Murray league late last year prompted the ‘Northern Rivers Project’ that is looking into the creation of a single competition or two divisions with promotion-relegation from 2026.
“We remain committed to changing leagues most definitely,” Ultima president Nathan Condely said.
The Central Rivers board is in charge of both leagues with a combined 17 clubs and board member Stuart King is heading up the ‘Northern Rivers Project’ team.
Golden Rivers has only six clubs — Ultima, Hay, Macorna, Moulamein, Murrabit and Wandella.
Central Murray club Cohuna Kangas have also made two unsuccessful attempts to join the Heathcote District league.
The North Central, Picola District and Loddon Valley leagues are also watching developments closely.
Under changes adopted by AFL Victoria recently, an “intention to transfer” form must be submitted by June 30.
Clubs wanting to change competitions must have met with the league they want to leave and join a month later.
