Lilly Richards, Leevi Williams and Te Rina Pearse led the charge for Stretton and were a perennial threat in attack.
Richards’ fancy footwork and quick speed from the second row was too much for Mabel Park as she scored two tries.
Meanwhile, Williams was a class above for the full 50 minutes in attack and defence.
The fullback was rock solid defensively and was an excitement machine every time she touched the ball.
Her lightning quick footwork and impressive work rate was eventually rewarded late in the game when she scored a 65m runaway try from a kick return to seal the contest.
LANGER TROPHY
Mabel Park State High School returned to the winner’s circle in round 3 of the Langer Trophy with a dominant performance against Stretton State College on Tuesday afternoon.
Mabel Park made it two wins from its opening three games as it cruised to a resounding 48-4 win.
Stretton showed some fight early in the clash, as Jontaye Brown crossed over for the first try of the contest in the third minute.
However, it was all one-way traffic from there as Mabel Park proved why it will be one of the contenders this season.
Mabel Park did most of its damage in a 25 minute spell where it scored seven tries and held a comfortable 32-4 lead at the break.
Duquan Talaepa was the star of the show with a dominant performance in the second row.
He combined beautifully with hooker Ezra Leota as the Stretton defensive line had no answer for the pair as they combined for three tries.
Talaepa burst through tackles with incredible speed and power and was relentless on the defensive end, even forcing a strip at one point in an all-round stellar performance.
Meanwhile outside backs Dean Tauaa and Cole Finter were an unstoppable force on the right edge as they picked up three tries between them as well.
WALTERS CUP
Mountain Creek pulled off a stunning comeback victory against Mabel Park in round 3 of the Walters Cup on Tuesday.
Down 22-6 in the second half, Mountain Creek had its back to the wall before five-eighth Billy Roderick stepped up with a sensational second half to help his side claim a thrilling 24-22 win.
Roderick’s playmaking throughout the whole clash was a joy to behold with his inch-perfect kicks across the field asking all kinds of questions of the Mabel Park defence and his conversions from out wide impeccable.
With less than four minutes to play, Mountain Creek trailed by four points when Roderick delivered a stunning crossfield kick to winger Taj Drake who scored in the corner.
With the pressure on his shoulders, Roderick blocked out the noise from the home crowd to nail the clutch conversion from the sideline which gave his side its first lead in the game with just two minutes on the clock.
The Mountain Creek left edge proved to be the game-changer as all four tires were scored by their three players on the left.
Centre Kaiden Jennings scored Mountain Creek’s first try of the game off the back of a Roderick kick and was one of their strongest players in the first half when momentum was in Mabel Park’s favour.
Meanwhile, Drake and edge forward Makani Madgwick combined for the three second half tries to pull off the stunning comeback.
PREVIEW
Discipline is set to be the name of the game for Mabel Park State High School when it travels to Langlands Park to take on Stretton State College in round 3 of the Langer Trophy.
The clash will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a big triple header of schools league action.
The coverage, which kicks off at 12pm on Tuesday, includes the Walters Cup clash between Mountain Creek and Mabel Park, and the NRL Schoolgirls Cup clash between Stretton and Mabel Park.
The Mabel Park Langer Trophy side started the year in incredible fashion with a statement win over defending champions Palm Beach Currumbin, but quickly came crashing back down to Earth last week when it suffered a 34-16 defeat at the hands of Keebra Park.
Mabel Park coach Ben Weston said the side’s poor discipline was the difference between its best game and its worst.
“That was what let us down last against Keebra,” he said.
“It was pretty good against Palm Beach in round 1, and then we sort of went away from it in round 2.
“So we just want to get back as playing as a team and getting our discipline right on both sides of the ball.”
Weston had high praise for Stretton College and expected a tough battle against the Storm’s middle forwards and their crafty spine.
“They’ll just come out, they’ll compete, they’re all effort,” he said.
“They’ve got some good players in their side and we know they’re going to look to come out and compete.
“They’ve got a good spine, so both halves (Jontaye Brown and Locky Martin), their hooker (Bailey Vang) and their fullback (Lexin Hill) are all pretty crafty and they can definitely play footy, so we’ll definitely have to shut them down.”
While Mabel Park’s class in the outside backs has been a focal point this season, Weston highlighted a trio of unsung players as key to their success this week.
Middle forwards Harrison Bath, Braddock Taylor and Natu Naisa are the engine room energisers who could be set for a breakout performance.
“I’ll like our middles to really set the platform early,” he said.
“I think if we could do that, then everything else sort of takes care of itself.
“It’s a very tough competition and it’s not easy to win games in this comp.
“So if we can win two of our first three, we’ll definitely take that and build some momentum going into round four and going into the holidays.”
