The opening day of the National Futsal Championships is in the bag, and it will shock few that a certain sky blue state made their presence felt in Victoria.

Football NSW made a strong start across most of the junior grades on Wednesday, and sit pretty heading into a massive second day at Melbourne’s Parkville Sports Centres.

NSW Lightning and Thunder sit atop their groups in the Under-14 boys, with the Thunder routing rivals Football South Australia by 10 goals in their tournament opener.

It was a similar story in the Under-13 girls, with NSW Thunder scoring 12-unanswered goals against Football SA to lead Pool C after the opening day.

Five of those goals went to Selena Mifsud, giving her a two goal advantage on the next best in the Under-13 ranks, NSW Lightning’s Anabel Carbone.

The hits kept coming for the Thunder, with Under-16 star Sophia Paz scoring six goals in two games as they made an unbeaten start to the tournament.

Football Queensland leads the way in the Under-16 boys competition after scoring 12 goals in two games as they beat Northern NSW and NSW Lightning on Wednesday.

Football Victoria scored an important 5-1 win over Football SA in the Under-17 girls, but they couldn’t back it up late on day one, falling to a resurgent NSW Storm side.

In the youngest age group - the Under-12 boys - NSW Thunder and NSW Lightning both picked up impressive 9-0 wins on the opening day to top their groups.

The day one action begins at 8am AEST and includes matches from Under-12 boys through to Under-17 girls and every age group in between.

While Queensland and New South Wales took home all the spoils from the national championships, host state Victoria have put together a strong contingent of players in every grade.
