The 2025 Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup champions were decided on Saturday with both thrilling results, blow out margins and upsets all taking place throughout the final day of action.
In an under 14 grand final battle full of twists and turns, it was the NZ Weka that secured a memorable 56-54 victory over Vic Goldminers that went right down to the wire.
After a foul on Cornelius Elisara, Goldminers young gun Buster Argall was sent to the free throw line for a chance to drag the margin back to one.
He wasn’t able to find the back of the net but he somehow once again had a chance at glory when he ended up with the ball off an inbound pass with four seconds on the clock.
Argall got his long range shot off but it was wide of the net, denying his side a famous victory and leaving the Weka side to produce a memorable post-game celebration.
In the first of the all Victorian deciders, the under 18 girls Bushrangers secured one of the upsets of the tournament to comfortably knock off the previously undefeated Goldminers 52-34.
The underdogs led at every change with the tandem duo of Meg Cooper (11 points) and Mia Harvey (10 points) too much for the Goldminers to handle.
The Bushrangers also claimed victory in the all-Victorian under 18 boys decider with a hard-fought 57-40 triumph.
In a game that looked destined to go right down to the wire, the Bushrangers broke away with a huge 21 point final term domination.
Just four points separated the two sides at the final break but the strong offensive showing, combined with holding the Goldminers to just 10 points, was enough to see the Bushrangers take home gold.
The Bushrangers also claimed victory in the earlier girls under 14 battle, knocking off NSW Waratahs by 17 points.
The 58-41 victory was off the back of a dominating second and third-quarters from the eventual victors with the Waratahs dragging the margin back with a 12-12 final term.
The Waratahs also went down in the girls under 16 battle with a tough 46-40 loss to interstate rivals NSW Kookaburras.
In a tight and contested battle, some strong first quarter dominance proved to be the difference in the end result with a 14-5 opening term getting the Kookaburras off to a hot start.
