A rising star in the women’s game has put her name up in lights with a complete opening day performance at the Basketball Australia Under-20 & Ivor Burge National Championships.
WNBL young gun Kiara Waite recorded a huge double-double, finishing with 21 points and 14 rebounds, as her Western Australia side knocked off Tasmania 83-70.
Perth Lynx big Waite was an ever-present force for WA and was ably assisted by Allira Fotu, Kyah Nichols, Amelia Corasaniti and Emma Clark.
WA will face a stern test next up when taking on reigning champions Victoria on Wednesday.
New South Wales’ men had a promising start as the Blue team took care of the ACT 77-68 before the state’s top side secured a a 10-point win over WA.
Steven Hall led the way with 16 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals for NSW.
Queensland’s women showed why they are a force to be reckoned with in the race for the title, demolishing the ACT 100-49.
In the final match of the day the NBA Global Academy made its first appearance but were no match for Victoria Navy.
The Vics led from start to finish with Joel Robinson (27 points) and Ryder Cheesman (21) doing the damage. Sebastien Emenalo topscored for the NBA GA with 22 points.

Queensland’s quest to reach the women’s grand final at the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships is set to begin with a battle against the Australian Capitial Territory on Tuesday.
Their clash at 3pm is one of six scheduled Court 4 matches which will be live streamed on KommunityTV on the opening day in Ballarat.
Bringing a talented line-up south for the tournament, Queensland will be hoping it can go one better than last year’s bronze medal game appearance.

Facing them first up is an ACT side led by the highly-rated Zara Russell.
The women from the capital endured a testing campaign in 2024 and facing Queensland should give them an early insight into how hard they can push the top teams this time around.
The ACT men meanwhile will get the Court 4 action started from 9am as they take on New South Wales Blue in an intriguing first up contest.
NSW’s top side will then take to the court straight after when they face Western Australia.
Closing out the day, the NBA Global Academy face Victoria Navy at 7pm.
Every match of the Basketball Australia Under-20 and Ivor Burge National Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from January 28 – February 2.
