Jacob Furphy may have the most widely recognisable name in Lake Ginninderra College’s basketball team, but two of his teammates put their own names in lights in a heart-stopping one-point win against The Southport School.

Furphy lived up to expectation, as he scored 23 points, grabbed 11 boards, four assists and three blocks, as Aleer Chol, who starred with a 10-point, 15-rebound double-double, and 209cm giant Ajak Nyuon, who shot at 60 per cent from the field as he finished with a game-high 27 points, shared the spotlight in the 84-83 win.

Jack Tweedy (23pts), Riley Oberman (17pts, 14reb) and Ash McGrath (19pts) led the TSS resistance, but fell agonisingly short of victory in a Day 1 classic.

Trinity College romped to a 106-65 win in the late game.

Rowville Secondary College sits top of the women’s championship Pool B standings after a thumping 76-46 win against Marsden State High to kick off their campaign in style.

Brisbane State High got off to an encouraging start with a 23-point win against Willetton Senior High School, putting them equal top of Pool A with John Paul College.

Queenslanders Mountain Creek State High sent a shockwave through the Under-20 Division 1 Women when they scored a dominant 20-point win over Pymble Ladies College in the opening game, while Marcellin College and Newington College both picked up convincing wins in the Under-20 Division 1 Men.

Replays for every match on Court 1 on Monday will be available to watch at the end of the day’s play.

Every match from the Championship and Under-20 Division 1 at the Basketball Australia Schools Championships will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from December 2-6.
