NTFL 2024-25 live stream: Watch Waratah v St Mary’s Round 4 live
Dan O’Dwyer kept the impact of Saints goalscorer Jackson Calder to a minimum in his return to the club as Waratah took control early and never let go to reign in the wet. Watch the REPLAY.
Waratah marked their first home game of the season by knocking off reigning premiers St Mary’s after getting the better of the wet conditions.
The Green Machine came into the fixture off a huge victory against PINT, but were unable to get an early foothold against a Tahs outfit that strangled their attacking momentum.
Waratah took the early lead, and didn’t fold under late pressure, to win 10.14 (74) to 9.9 (63).
It was new Tahs coach Rick Nolan’s first match against his former club since returning to the Men’s Premier League, and he made it count in the tough post-storm conditions.
Dan O’Dwyer had a great showing down back in his return to the club, and in doing so limited the impact of Saints goal scorer Jackson Calder.
Every time the ball came Calder’s way, O’Dwyer served as his shadow, punting the ball out of view or locking the big man down on the tackle to mark the latest battle between the pair.
“It was great to be back out there, I got a bit excited early and went hard, so was struggling for petrol tickets in the final quarter,” O’Dwyer said.
“Jacko is always a good match up, he’s got me a few times and he got a couple, so it’s hard to keep him goalless, but it’s always good to play on him and stop a few.
“It was pretty hard when Saints kicked the first couple in the last, but a few of the boys like (Brodie) Carroll, who loves kicking a sealer, stepped up and allowed us to hold on there.
“Once the rain came down in the early arvo, we went to Territory footy, just about metres gained and getting pressure on the ball when it comes to ground, hoping we can be harder at it for longer.”
Waratah were strong through the middle with Liam Odea and Riley Irvin getting stuck into the ruck contest against William Robinson, while Ricky Monti got plenty of the action once again.
Scott Carlin ensured the forward line got plenty of the action as the Tahs claimed an early lead they would never let go of.
Young gun Maxirrick Rogers was exciting early and claimed a highlight reel moment with a banana goal from beyond the sideline in the second quarter that he celebrated with plenty of enthusiasm.
Saints had their usual performers, namely Dylan Landt and Joel Garner, turning in strong showings as expected.
It was just finding their way through the high pressure game of the Tahs defence that turned every foray forward into a scrap.
The Green Machine did surge in the final quarter when they finally got on top of their foes in the key areas, but will live to rue a slew of behinds.
Liam O’Brien, from Palm Beach in the QAFL, broke that run of points with a goal, and when Calder and Garner also kicked true, the match was on a knife’s edge once more with just minutes left.
Waratah’s effort then showed with skipper Dylan Collis moving forward to inject some energy into the forward line, after a great shift in the backline.
The man of the moment though was Carroll, who found himself on the spot late after some big efforts already and slotted through for the goal his side knew was the sealer.

Waratah, the 2022-23 champs, sit in fifth spot with just one win from their opening three games, though those losses have come against two top three contenders in Southern Districts and Nightcliff.
This match is a chance to prove they have what it takes to be a title candidate again this season.
Playing at home for the first time this season will certainly help and they will hope a packed ground will give the Saints a noisy welcome.
