NTFL 2024-25 live stream: Watch Wanderers vs St Mary’s in Round 5
St Mary’s were made to work for their win in a high pressure, but scrappy, game against old rivals Wanderers. Watch the match REPLAY here.
St Mary’s pressure game proved too much in the end, but a Wanderers side full of fight made them work for their win.
Saints had to contend with both a Muk Muks outfit up for the contest and slippery post-storm conditions to impose themselves on the contest.
As such it took a while for the reigning premiers to take control, but eventually their high pressure game came to the fore and they were able to seal the match 13.14 (92) to 5.8 (38).
Wanderers had the early running carrying momentum from their first win of the season last round and an eagerness to take the contest right to the reigning premiers.
Max Johnson was a force in the ruck battle throwing plenty of his weight around, and as a result his ball magnets Jack Sinclair and Jaxon East were able to do what they do best.
Their efforts resulted in plenty of positive time on the ball and though it took three attempts before his first goal the busy Jak Trewin was the benefactor.
But almost as soon as they had assured some ascendency errors crept into their game and the Saints were able to work their pressure game.
Saints’ returnee Nate Paredes was a lynchpin at ground level, combining well with skipper Dylan Landt and Jack Landt to find some momentum through the midfield.
The Muk Muks defensive setup was equally up for the contest, in spite of some errors, with their captain Mitchel Taylor once again the rock back there.
Saints’ main target Jackson Calder was contained by Riley Calvene early on, but the forward is impossible to keep out entirely and went on to score six goals for the contest.
Those scores were a result of constant pressure from across the Saints squad with Xavier Vallejo, Mitch Musgrove and William Robinson among those getting stuck into every contest.
But most important to the Green Machine’s go forward was Kieren Parnell, who running out of half back always struck the ball with intent.
The defender hit hard on the tackle and sought the turnover at every opportunity dispelling Wanderers’ attempts forward and creating attacking platforms for Saints.
It was those efforts that cemented Saints right to attack, and inspired similar showings from the Green Machine’s younger contingent, such as Chad Bertrand who enjoyed a strong outing.
And all Saints had to do from their was turn up the pressure, at times making it hard for themselves, but doing enough to see out the scrappy affair.
“That was a relief, last week we lost to a really good side and the message was to try and bounce back and return to St Mary’s footy,” Parnell said.
“Wanderers definitely brought it early, which happens every time we play them no matter where they are on the ladder because of the rivalry we have.
“We just went back to setting up the ground well, playing front half footy that is part of our new game plan we’ve adapted to that set us up for the win.
“Our run and carry is one of the strengths of St Mary’s and has been for a number of years, we just backed ourselves, took the game on and got it to our forwards.”

PREVIEW
Two of the league’s best ball-winners will go head-to-head in a battle of midfield might as St Mary’s and Wanderers clash in Round 5 of the NTFL Premier Men’s season.
Saints ball magnet, and NTFL disposals record holder, Dylan Landt will clash with Wanderers disposal machine Jaxon East in the primetime stoush.
The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment from 7pm on Saturday.
East has quickly become a leading ball magnet in the NTFL this season, averaging more than 38 disposals a game for Wanderers this season.
His best on ground effort last week, which included 36 disposals, 10 clearances, nine inside 50s and two score assists, was key to the Wanderers picking up their first win of the season over Palmerston.
But opposite East is the man who has been at the forefront of the NTFL disposals leaderboard for the past few years, premiership-winning captain Landt.
The Saints leader is averaging 31 disposals per game this season, and will be at the heart of their efforts to abolish last week’s lost to Waratah from the memory.
The premiers stormed out of the blocks to start the season, but were strangled for opportunity on goal by an impressive Waratah.
It would have given the Green Machine plenty to think about, and this time around will be eager to right those wrongs to storm to another win.
Watch the full replay of the match at the end of the game.
The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to live stream both the men’s and women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
