The Tiwi Bombers women defended their home turf at Wurrumiyanga Oval in commanding fashion against the Palmerston Magpies.
Under the searing heat and in front of adoring fans the Bombers’ skill shone through against their opposition, who have now lost their past three games.
Other than kicking accuracy, the Bombers were dominant in all facets of the contest, claiming an 11.14 (80) to 4.4 (28) victory.
The Bombers got right into their work eager to prove themselves in front of family and friends, but were unable to penetrate the Pies’ sturdy back line.
An even opening period turned into somewhat of a stalemate as Hayley Finning and Ella Ward won the ball back on clearances repeatedly.
Despite the frenetic nature of the game both sides were still unable to separate from the other.
The Bombers fell flat in the second, coughing up its lead, allowing the Pies to walk off with a three point advantage.
A roaring half time speech by their coach the Bombers surged back to life, peppering the Pies goal mouth.
A number of missed kicks were the home sides only critique in the third as Maria Rioli, Kimberley Cunningham and Jelena Tipungwuti ran riot, kicking 5.6 while keeping the black and whites to a single behind.
Tiwi didn’t take the foot off the gas in the final period, compounding the wounded Magpies with zest.
Palmerston’s Taelah Smith, Ward and Marika Carlton did their best to drum up some resolve but the damage was too great.
Tiwi islander Jamie Lee Puautjimi was back in a Bombers guernsey after a season out of the game and said she proud to have put on a show for her home crowd.
“I’m so proud and happy that we could get a win today in front of all the mob that came to watch and in front of all my loved ones,” she said.
“We barely get to play on the island so it’s very special to us to play our best.
“A lot of our girls are having a good season for Bombers and they played good again against Palmerston.
“We are going well and are happy with a big win.”
