Southern Districts have pulled another slaughter with a thrashing of a hapless Palmerston Magpies to extend their lead at the top of the NTFL table.

The Crocs leapt out of the blocks and booted 10 goals to two during the first term and maintained that formidable dominance throughout the game.

And as a result they pulled off a dominant 32.12 (204) to 5.3 (33) win to cement their spot at the top.

Districts were set up by ruckman Wyatt Ryan and a slick, hard running mid-field with Mattt Shannon, Matthew Johnston, Josiah Farrer and Beau Schwarze, who were untouchable around the ball.

From there forwards Will Farrer and Will Sexton were the main beneficiaries, and the home team had five on the board inside the first 10 minutes.

Magpie small forward Michael Bezzene countered with a brace of six-pointers, but with his defensive teammates under siege, the tricolours banged through five more of their own and lead by a near-match winning 53-point margin at the first break.

Worse was to come for the visitors who failed to score in the second while the Crocs slammed through seven more with Shannon and Jack Sexton claiming five between them.

A solitary goal to Deacon Summerville was the only reason for cheer among the Palmy faithful in the third quarter while Josiah Farrer alone got three while roaming, seemingly unmarked, around the front half.

Another seven for the term set the Crocs up with an unassailable 137-point lead going into the last.

Eight goals to two in the final term lifted the winning margin to 171 points and with the bye next round, the rural men sit comfortably at the top of the table.

Palmerston had few moments in the game to call their own and while some players did have brief moments of individual triumph.

Those included Nicholas Hind, Ryan Warfe on the wing and defenders Traye Bennell and Spencer Fox, who after starting in the ruck, had the unenviable task of settling in at fullback.

Playing his first game of the season was Croc veteran and premiership player Charlie McAdam and while he spent most of his time across halfback, he is conscious of the need to perform at every opportunity in such a star-studded side.

“I thought the boys played pretty much our week-to-week style today and while we got the job done, the challenge will be to follow that pattern against the top sides when we meet them after the bye,” said McAdam.

“That was my first one back for the year after a couple in the reserves and it’s good the be back with my brothers in the premier league.

“Halfback flank is my position now and I need to try and cement a spot in a really good backline which won’t be easy because we’ve got depth with 36 blokes trying to get into a team, and while that is healthy, there is no guarantee I will make it into the future.

“However, I will work hard and won’t make it easy for others to replace me.”

Preview

Ladder leaders Southern Districts return to their home ground with the intent of extending their lead when they take on rivals Palmerston.

The NT News and KommunityTV will stream every moment of the clash from 4pm on Saturday.

The Berrimah Line face-off has been a rivalry in the competition for a while, but for Districts this will be another match they’ll be targeting to put on a big score.

Jed Anderson and Matt Shannon have been among the best players in the competition all season, but that’s something you can say about a lot of the Districts squad.

They’re a dominant force in every part of the field from the ruck where Wyatt Ryan picked up 50 hitouts last round to the forward line where just about anyone can kick a goal.

It presents an incredibly difficult challenge for Palmerston, who though they’re in the winner’s circle this season are still behind the league’s current best side.

Ryan Warfe and Cameron Nyko have turned up every round and their services will be required, while Nick Hind is getting the touches his side will need to get on the board.
